We never expect anything conventional from the Finns, and Shogun Kunitoki have shown no sign of slowing down on their second album, Vinonaamakasio. Completed in the last three years, the new work squeezes more energy out of the electronic kraut/progressive rock vibe that has become a cornerstone to the quartet's sound. The opening sequence of songs quickly establishes the band's power mix of sounds, and in many ways, they take the best parts of Grails and Battles, starve them for several weeks, and then unleash them on one another in a cage fight to the death. Although a short album, the thickness of the record blindsides the audience like a bag of bricks to the head: few will notice any shortage of music. Highly recommended for those seeking something off the beaten path.
