Biography
Mt. are Ben Maxwell and Laura Harrison. They started writing together in 2000, and formed their first band ctrlaltdelete with Chris Hewitt in 2002. The band remained in the rehearsal space at first, releasing some demos on cassette, and eventually a fully fledged 3 track CD. These caused a stir, which led to an ever increasing string of gigs around the country, and the eventual release in 2003 of their debut ep ‘epONE’, recorded in Chem19 under the watchful eye of Andy Miller. The CD was limited to 300, and has now become a coveted item, not least for the amazing packaging designed by Barry Smith.
The band headed back to the studio (this time with Johannes Rowlinson at Oldwell Studios, Winlaton) in 2005 to record the follow up, having since graduated from their degrees, and freshly signed to Motivesounds Recordings. ‘mondegreens’ was recorded, but for many reasons, Ben and Laura parted company with Chris and scrapped the recording. A month or so later they returned to the studio with new drummer Simon Papaleo in tow, re-recorded the EP to a higher standard, and set about gigging as much as possible.
A limited run of 500 ‘mondegreens’ EP’s was released and has gone on to receive excellent reviews nationally and internationally, although unfortunately due to other commitments Simon left the band a few months later.
Feeling that ctrlaltdelete had become laden with too many setbacks and negative memories, Ben and Laura locked themselves away in the practice space and began writing for what would end up being 5 months, meeting Robert Holmkvist in the process and forming a new band, Mt.
Having wasted enough time searching for a drummer already, the band plunged head first into the deep end, recording ‘Lethologica’, their debut album, over five days in June at Fisher Street Studios with Nic Jay, arranged and organized the joint headline tour ‘Force Majeure’ in August 2006 with Kent’s up-and-coming Upcdowncleftcrightcabcandstart (releasing a split single at the same time), contributed tracks to five compilation CD’s and gathered a menagerie of great reviews in the process.
Since this time, Rob has left the band due to university commitments, and Ben and Laura are hard at work on Mt.’s second album, working with various percussionists and planning their next tour…
