Biography
Triosk was formed in Sydney, Australia in 2001 with the objective to perform improvised-based music in which electronics played an active and equal role.
Laurence Pike (Drums), Adrian Klumpes (Piano/Keyboards) and Ben Waples (Double/Electric Bass) are three improvisers who came together searching for something beyond the conventions of the jazz trio. They continue to look for new ways to combine the sound and unity of purpose of a great piano trio with the textures and processes of minimalism and electronic music. In this regard, production is also a key component in their music. This can involve layering of both acoustic and electronic sounds and manipulating the natural sounds of their instruments, whether in live performance or the studio.
In a live setting, Triosk fluctuate between the atmospheric sound scapes of their recorded work, and high-energy minimalist improvisations dedicated to the exploration of the trio's musical possibilities and limits.
When Jan Jelinek toured Australia in November 2001, he met Triosk, and an alliance based on mutual musical interests was formed. The result of this relationship was the collaborative album Triosk meets Jan Jelinek '1+3+1' (released November 2003 on Berlin's ~scape label) an album crossing boundaries of both distance and genre. The music is as unique as the process of its creation via mail between Sydney and Berlin.
In August 2004 Triosk and Jan Jelinek appeared live together for the first time in a successful Australian tour supported by Triple J radio, including a performance at the inaugural jazz:now festival at the Studio, Sydney Opera House.
In October 2004, Triosk were signed to the prestigious UK based Leaf Label, and internationally released the album 'Moment Returns'. Recorded in 1 1/2 days at the same recording session as '1+3+1', 'Moment Returns' is a first chance to hear the music of Triosk on it's own and as it was before their impending collision with Jelinek. Also included the original two triosk pieces which inspired the collaboration with Jan Jelinek through the sampling of his work; 'chrono-synclastic infundibula' and 'i am a beautiful and unique snowflake'.
In April 2005, Triosk undertook a successful European tour in support of the album, visiting Germany, Holland, Belgium, Greece, England and Scotland. The tour included appearances at Brussel's Domino Festival, The Triptych Festival in Scotland and a performance with Jan Jelinek at Berlin's Volksbuhne.
A unique trio whose distinctive aesthetic continues to confront the paradigms of music making by probing the relationship between the improviser and digital technology, as well as exploring the shadow ground between electronic music and the heritage of acoustic improvisation.
Triosk's forthcoming album 'The Headlight Serenade' is due to be released on Leaf in June 2006.
